Note, interview was originally in Ironman magazine in '97, so it was someone who was prominent 8 years ago.
I don't have a guess but I believed at the time I originally read the intereview that the person referenced as adding considerable mass to an aesthetic physique after many close seconds is(was) Shawn Ray.
As a side note, I recently read that Milos Sarcev, who was a prominent bodybuilder a decade or so ago was busted for dealing steroids.

The price of some of this stuff. I'm doing Ok I am told financially but honestly this would put some constraints on me. I'l take a Jag and some decent cash for that investment.

Epilogue
Since the interview was published 8 years ago, has his prediction that "You're going to see lots of guys dying in the next few years" come true?
It's a sad and pathetic state that the sport seems to be in. However, I'm so pleased to know that he has never had any problem with "the bitches." Sounds like a great guy.

Betty,
There have been more than a few deaths in the past couple years among superheavyweight powerlifters and strongmen. I don't know whether any of them used drugs or not, but the take-home message that I got was that being 300+ pounds isn't real healthy. Hence my slimming-down efforts of late.
I don't follow bodybuilding, so I'm not sure if the fellow's prediction has come true. From what I've picked up on in reading interviews like these, though, the lifestyle that pro bodybuilders follow makes bulimia-and-heroin runway models look like health nuts by comparison. All those hormones and drugs have got to catch up with them someday.

I think quite a few bodybuilders have died or had pretty bad health problems. Interestingly, they blame it on other things, not on steroids. (inherited heart disease, cocaine use, etc etc)

You read my mind. I had exactly the same reaction to that. What a cretin.

This was posted on another forum by Gene Mozee regarding steriod problems. For those that do not know Mozee use to be an editor for some of Weider's magazines in the 60s and could bench press over 400 back then I believe.
Did you see the following from the Muscle Mag forum? Quite interesting. Other names that can be added to the information below are: Paul Grant--dead, kidney failure; Carlos Rodriguez, dead cancer; Mike and Ray Mentzer, dead before age 50;
Hans Hopstaken, dead age 45 kidney failure; Tom Sansone, dead age 40 liver cancer. Great progress the sport of bodybuilding has made in creating premature death with the help of muscle enhancing drugs. The first woman to bench press 400 died at age 38.
I Have Not Been Reading The Mags Lately, Too Busy Training And Working. I Picked Up A Mag At The Store Today And I See That Dave Polumbo Is In Prison. Gee, Thats Pretty Unusual, A Body Builder Going To Jail Or Dropping Dead At 30 Years Old. That Never Happens. What Did That Idiot Do To Get Locked Up? It Could Not Be Related To Drugs, Could It????!!!!
Why Cant People Just Learn To Eat Big, Train Hard And Be Strong Without Drugs.getting Into Professional Body Building Or Other Strength Sports Has A Lot Rewards. Lets See:tim Belknap, Triple By Pass Surgery At 35, Mike Matarazzo, Triple By Pass At 39, Flex Wheeler, No Kidneys, Don Long, No Kidneys, Don Youngblood, Dead, Mohamad Benazeza, Dead, Sonny Schmidt, Dead, Paul Demayo, Dead, Trevor Smith, Dead, Bertil Fox, Prison, Dave Palumbo, Prison, Tom Prince, No Kidneys, Phil Hernon, Prison, Johny Morant, Prison, Andreas Munzer, Dead, Mike Francious, I Know Everybody Thinks He Only Retired Due To Colitis But He Almost Died In Surgery Because Of All The Tumors In His Guts From The Juice, Don Ross, Dead, Jon Paul Sigramson, Dead, O.d. Wilson, Dead, Johny Perry, Dead.
Those Are Just A Few Names That Pop Into My Head Without Thinking About It. Awesome Sport We Have Here. Can't Wait To See What Starts To Happen To All The Pros From The 1990's When The Real Juice Started To Flow (dillet, Nasser, Yates, Fux, Etc). Heck Its Already Happening With Wheeler And Some Others. I Wonder What Happened To Leverone. I See Ads With Him Looking Like A Male Cheer Leader. Did He Blow Out An Organ Or Just Wise Up? I Do Love The Sport, Just A Get A Little Frustrated With The Reality Of It.
In addition, I saw where Anthony Clary first to bench 800 passed away at age 38...Date of passing was 5/26/05. Curtis Wefler a massive body builder passsed away at age 38 in 1997.
Another article mentioned where many of these strongest pro football players are passing away in their 40s and early 50s.

Krikey!
That is truly alarming. But I guess men and women get into this sport knowing the risks. I hope they find a way to clean up the sport but obviously educating the participants is not much of a deterant.

Remember, these are the "BIG Names" he is calling out off the top of his head. What about the droves of "lesser knowns" that bite the dust all the time?

The other day at the gym I go to got to talking to this fellow who was about 6 foot and 265 was massive and ripped. However, he was a real nice fellow. He told me of all these people using in the joint. Some are not much above average. He told me of a guy there in his late 60s asking about blood in the urine from guess what. This is unreal that people of that age are getting into it. What for? To win the Mr. Social Security contest?
