There, I said it. I hate the midwest. There is NOTHING here. I'm from Indiana, and there is nothing. I can't find a good gym. I can't find good workout partners. I can't find a good competition to even watch, let alone compete in because they gyms here are so bad. Our local YMCA has one of the best gyms in the area, and it is horrible. It's nothing but machines, machines, machines. Even our "power racks" are just Smith Machines. I was always taught free weights when I was in football and wrestling, and now there aren't any free weights for 50 miles. I need to move somewhere else. And now, I'm done ranting.

Watch the classifieds (or craigslist if you're anywhere near Indianapolis) for secondhand dumbbells and a bench and just set yourself up at home. You don't need a gym.

So is this a Midwest bashing thread? I used to live in Dayton and I have plenty to say
Actually, I loved going to school in Dayton as well as the 'burbs of Montgomery County (who knew that I would live in a "Montgomery County" in 3 states?).
Being an east coast guy, though, everything was a bit, um, slow for my taste.
I dunno. I had the impression that the midwest was where things are hopping in powerlifting right now. I figured this was because there's nothing to do but lift weights or go cow tipping. :) Are any of the gyms in this link anywhere near you?

If not, just buy a power rack, bench, and an olympic weight set. You will someday anyway, so you might as well get it out of the way now. :)

Hmmm...I'm pretty damn close to Muncie, but you have to be a BSU student to join the BSU group. At least, I'm fairly sure you do. I've seen Iron Horse before, pass it about every three days or so. It might be worth it to go check it out. I've always thought it looked like a trash heap, but it there's always a possibility. As far as buying stuff goes, I would love to, but I have more than a few problems with that. First and foremost, money. I'm just a college student, and have next to no money. Secondly, even if I did get the equipment, I have NO place to put it. However, thanks for the suggestions. Maybe someday when I'm not running around like a crazy person I'll check out Iron Horse.

How could you resist a place called Big Daddy's Iron Horse Gym? So it looks like a trash heap! That keeps out the cute and fuzzy bunnies.

Damn straight. I'd take that as a positive sign. :)
Also, you're in college, right? Doesn't your college have a gym somewhere? I've attended 3 colleges, and they all had some kind of gym facilities, and 2 of them were really pretty awesome.

Your school doesn't have a decent gym?
In any case, I'd check out Iron Horse . . . the name sounds tough and primitive -- you might find it's a good fit for your needs.
