View Full Version : Kent Stax
I saw Kent Stax come up in the chat today. He was one of the very best drummers in the punk rock thing, maybe the best entirely. I'm glad to find out that he's still in the game.

I've never heard his stuff. There was this guy who used to play with Frank Gambale, but I can't recall his name. He must've had the quickest right foot I've ever heard...his triplets were nothing short of amazing!

He's the best, hands down, and as good as he's ever been. Playing in a band with him is no doubt the pinnacle of anything I'll ever do musically. I look down at my guitar while we're playing and just think, "Damn, I really don't know anything about this thing, do I?" Then I look over at Kent and he's pounding out a deceptively simple-sounding, mountain-solid beat -- but left handed...with one hand...having a conversation with the sound guy over his shoulder. And he's the most decent guy you could ever meet. I'm a fan.

Hmmm....great drummers I've seen....top of the list? Elvin Jones with John Coltrane - league of his own...Ginger Baker fer sure...Mitch Mitchell - I saw Moon once - manic, slightly sloppy...guys you've likely not heard art blakey...saw Buddy Rich one time - ever heard the tape of Rich cussing out his 30-poece band after a bad night and too much nose candy? best cussing I've ever heard....Billy Cobham - rock guys? Levon Helm of the Band is from my mother's neighborhood so I loved his old wooden drums tuned flat...Al Jackson of booker T backing Otis and sam & dave and carla thomas on the '67 stax/volt review...I liked the kid on the sex pistols album (loved steve jones' thunder chords) - on and on it goes - can't forget Papa Ceto of the funk brothers...
