I'm 50, signifiacantly overweight, and have a serious hike I want very much to do this summer. Have been walking hills (just added a pack) for about six weeks. When I ate few enough calories to drop a few pounds I was exhausted all the time. When I up the calories the weight doesn't budge. I started weight training which I'd done in a previous life -- don't know if I went to fast, but got really tired. Help -- I don't know where to start and I only have three months left to get ready.

Melody, welcome to the forum! I encourage you to join the live chat tomorrow and interact with Marty directly. In any case he should be by in the next day or two to address you.

the best single thing you can to in order to prepare for a long hike is to hike as often and as far as you can...the more hikes you can get in before kickoff the better - will you be carrying a weight back pack? IIf so you better allow at least two weeks of weighted pack carrying at your local park - feet, ankles, knees and lower back need be gradually and systematically acclimbatized to the stress - get to hiking!
